Saki Santorelli

Jon Kabat-Zinn founded and Saki Santorelli is the director of the internationally acclaimed Stress Reduction Clinic at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester, Massachusetts. For more than 20 years the clinic has treated over 12,000 medical patients, referred to this 8-week group-based outpatient programme with a range of conditions including heart disease, cancer, AIDS, chronic pain, stress-related gastrointestinal problems, headaches, high blood pressure, sleep disorders, anxiety and panic. The primary work of the clinic is intensive training in mindfulness meditation and its applications to stress, pain, and illness and to the challenges/adventures of everyday life. Research has shown that most participants in the Stress Reduction Clinic programme experience long-lasting improvements in both physical and psychological symptoms, as well as major positive changes in health attitudes and behaviours and in their perception of self and self in relationship to others and the world. Research in the UK and Canada has also shown mindfulness training to have a significant effect in reducing depressive relapse for those with three or more previous episodes of major depressive disorder.
This retreat programme is an opportunity for health and other care professionals in Germany and Europe to train intensively in mindfulness meditation as it is taught in the Stress Reduction Clinic in the form of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR). This unique training approach has had a profound effect on the work of thousands of professionals caring for physical and mental health, including physicians, surgeons, psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, social workers, nurses and hospital administrators. Drs Kabat-Zinn and Santorelli view mindfulness as the potential foundation for a new, highly cost-effective model of comprehensive health care in clinical medicine, medical education and health promotion, among other areas of care.
This event is open to health and other professionals who come prepared for the intensive nature of the workshop and who understand the primary necessity of embodying mindfulness meditation practice in ones own life before attempting to teach it to others. The retreat includes both intensive training in mindfulness meditation and a range of issues about its practical applications in health and social care.
There is no previous experience in meditation practice necessary to attend this retreat. It is the depth of ones personal commitment to learning and growing using this approach that is most important: integrating mindfulness into both ones personal and ones professional life comes out of that commitment and the imagination and effort it inspires. Participants for whom mindfulness meditation is a novel experience and who do not already have a strong daily personal meditation practice should not have the expectation of immediately returning home to set up Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction courses after attending this retreat, since the cardinal principle in doing this work is that it must come out of ones own extensive personal experience with the meditation practice. While information on creating MBSR courses in different settings is touched on, it is not a major focus of the retreat, and attendance at this retreat does not constitute authorization by Drs Kabat-Zinn and Santorelli to teach Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction.

As a community of professionals caring for people´s health and well-being, we will practice mindfulness together intensively. Specific themes and areas of focus include:

• the seamless cultivation of mindfulness throughout the retreat, through both formal and informal practices, both in silence and in conversation and dialogue
• the details of instructing and guiding others in the formal and informal methods of mindfulness meditation in various settings
• mindful approaches to the experience and expression of grief, pain, and anxiety within ourselves and when working with others
• review of research supporting the clinical value of mindfulness based stress reduction
• review of the essential components of a viable programme
• teacher readiness and competency
• assessment and screening protocols
• specific programme structure and content
• how to work with personal and professional stress
• the necessity for the teaching to come out of ones own personal mindfulness practice to be of use to others
• small group work will be included.

The whole training will be held in English.
